M25 Marburg GER – Louis Wessels successfully defends title

Defending champion Louis Wessels captured the trophy of the 22nd edition of the Marburg Open, hosted by the venue of TV 1965 Marburg e.V.

The 22-year-old German fought through the bottom half of the draw, beating Marko Tepavac from Serbia in the semi-finals in three sets.

Nick Hardt from the Dominican Republic, who already clinched three trophies this season, advanced to the final with a straight-set victory against Dutch Ryan Nijboer.

Lasting more than three hours, unseeded Wessels won four points more in a thrilling title match to secure a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 win. The Bielefeld native, who lives in Detmold and is coached by his father, celebrated his sixth title on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

Struggling with muscular problems at the buttock and legs for the whole tournament, Wessels said after the final: “During the week, I thought about a retirement for several times but I conquered my weaker self. I am so happy that I won the battle”. The former World No. 17 in the ITF Junior Rankings earned €3,239 as well as 20 ATP Ranking points to rise to World No. 420.

The doubles trophies went to the Netherlands. Daniel de Jonge and Guy den Ouden rallied past Tim Handel from Germany and his Swiss partner Yannik Steinegger 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 in the championship match.

The Marburg Open, a tournament part of the DTB Internationals presented by Wilson, was an ATP Challenger Tour event from 2010 to 2018 and returned to the ITF World Tennis Tour in 2019. The tournament was upgraded to 25K-category this year. 

M25 Ajaccio FRA – Clement Chidekh crowns sensational run in Corsica

The Open D’Ajaccio – Corsica Tennis Open, held at Mezzavia Tennis, concluded with the surprising title win of Clement Chidekh.

The college player for the University of Washington, who is currently ranked World No. 1910, won the all-French semifinal-encounter against his No. 6 seeded countryman Calvin Hemery in straight sets. 

Petros Tsitsipas, the younger brother of World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas, ended the run of French qualifier Loris Pourroy in the semi-finals in three sets.

Lyon-born Chidekh, who battled through the qualifying, converted six of his 12 break-point chances by dropping one service game in the championship match to triumph 6-3, 6-0 in 70 minutes. The 20-year-old lifted his first singles trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

M25 Velenje SLO – Alexander Shevchenko prevails in Slovenia

Alexander Shevchenko was victorious at the Velenje Open 2021, held at the Saleski Teniski Klub Velenje. 

The 20-year-old Russian took the last step to the final by defeating Colombian No. 8 seed Cristian Rodriguez in three sets.

Last week’s Antalya-champion Patrik Rikl from the Czech Republik, the son of former tennis professional David Rikl, edged out Chilean No. 5 seed Gonzalo Lama in the semi-finals in three sets.

Unseeded Shevchenko capitalized on all of his four break-point opportunities in the championship match without losing a service game to claim a 6-1, 6-2 victory after 62 minutes. The Rostov-On-Don native, who is coached by Günter Bresnik, celebrated his third singles trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

M25 Casinalbo ITA – Franco Agamenone triumphs on home soil

In-form Franco Agamenone clinched the trophy of the XXXVII Memorial Eugenio Fontana, held at the Club La Meridiana in Casinalbo.

The Argentina native, who has represented Italy since 2020, fought past Brazilian No. 5 seed Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida in three sets.

Matteo Arnaldi booked the spot in the all-Italian final with a straight-set win versus No. 6 seeded Dutch Gijs Brouwer.

No. 4 seeded Agamenone won 86 per cent of his first-service points in the title match and broke his 20-year-old opponent four times to prevail 6-4, 6-1 in 69 minutes. The 28-year-old lifted his ninth career trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour, his fifth of the season.

M25 Nur-Sultan KAZ – Evgeny Karlovskiy back in winners‘ circle

The Nur-Sultan International Tournament 1, hosted by the National Tennis Center, concluded with the title win of Evgeny Karlovskiy.

The Russian No. 5 seed advanced to the final with a straight-set victory against Kazakh wild card entry Beibit Zhukayev.

The tournament’s second favourite Yu Hsiou Hsu from Chinese Taipei, who was ranked World No. 5 as a junior, battled past former World No. 39 Andrey Kuznetsov from Russia in the semi-finals in two sets.

Twenty-six-year-old Karlovskiy sent down eight aces and won 75 per cent of his first-service points in the championship match to seal a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win after two hours and 28 minutes. The Moscow native celebrated his eighth singles title on the ITF World Tennis Tour in addition to his ATP Challenger title in Winnetka 2018, which was his last triumph on the Pro Circuit. 

M15 Poprad SVK – Damien Wenger with debut title on Pro Circuit

Damien Wenger captured the trophy of the Poprad Tatry Open 2021, held at the Poprad City Tennis Areal.

The 21-year-old from Biel advanced to the final with a three-set victory versus Slovakian wild card entry Milos Karol. 

Tomas Jirousek from the Czech Republic cruised past Argentinian junior entry Roman Andres Burruchaga in the semi-finals in straight sets.

La Neuveville resident Wenger converted five of his 17 break-point chances in the title match and dropped two service games to succeed 6-2, 7-5 after two hours and 18 minutes. The No. 6 seed lifted his first singles trophy on the ITF World Tennis Tour. 

M15 Almada POR – Daniel Cox returns to winners’ circle

Thirty-year-old Daniel Cox from Great-Britain emerged victorious at the Almada Open, hosted by Caparica Tennis.

The former World No. 206, who took a break from the tennis tour in 2017 for two and a half years to found the Lincoln Tennis Academy, edged past Portuguese wild card entry Duarte Vale in the semi-finals in two sets. 

Fabio Coelho, another local wild card, made the last step to the final by beating Brazilian No. 3 seed Joao Lucas Reis da Silva in straight sets.

Qualifier Cox outpointed his 21-year-old rival in the championship match 102-90 to claim a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win after two hours and 35 minutes. The Lincoln native celebrated his 15th career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour, his first title since 2015.

M15 Monastir TUN – Valentin Vacherot earns maiden title 

Qualifier Valentin Vacherot from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin took the title of the Magic Hotel Tours tournament, held at the Hotel Skanes Family in Monastir. 

The France-born, who is based at the Monegasque Training Camp FMT and represents Monaco in the Davis Cup, eased past Argentinian No. 3 seed Matias Franco Descotte in the semi-finals in straight sets.

US-American Omni Kumar, who played his 8th consecutive tournament in Monastir and won the trophy two weeks ago, defeated former junior’s World No. 9 Rinky Hijikata from Australia in the stage of the last four in two sets.

Twenty-two-year-old Vacherot won 76 per cent of his first-service points in the title match to prevail 6-4, 6-4 after one hour and 48 minutes. The former college player for the Texas A&M University lifted his first singles trophy on the Pro Circuit. 

M15 Sofia BUL – Dragos Nicolae Madaras captures third trophy of the season

Dragos Nicolae Madaras is the champion of the Diana Cup 2021, which was hosted by the Tennis Club Diana in Sofia.

The No. 4 seed edged out Chinese former juniors World No. 8 Hanwen Li in the semi-finals in two sets. 

Francisco Comesana from Argentina battled through the top half of the draw, beating Italian No. 8 seed Alexander Weis in the stage of the final four in straight sets.

Romania-born Madaras, who represents Sweden, won four points less in the championship match but secured a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory after almost three hours. The 23-year-old celebrated his fourth career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour and his third in 2021.
