Tallon Griekspoor captured the title of the €66,640 Kooperativa Bratislava Open held on the clay courts of the TK Slovan Bratislava. The No. 5 seed from the Netherlands defeated Argentine Sebastian Baez 7-6(6), 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final in Slovakia.

Griekspoor battled through the bottom half of the draw to reach the championship match with wins over Belarusian qualifier Uladzimir Ignatik, Steven Diez from Canada, Czech teenager Jiri Lehecka and local favourite Martin Klizan.

The World No. 131 capitalized on six of his nine break point chances in the title match to seal victory in one hour and 30 minutes.

“It was a very tough match. He is a good player. He won three Challengers this year,” said Griekspoor. “The wind made it very tough for both of us today. I think that we didn’t play our best tennis but I managed to play a good second set in the end.”

By lifting his fourth ATP Challenger trophy, his second of the season following his triumph in Prague last month, Griekspoor took away €9,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP Ranking points from Bratislava.

“It’s always nice to win a tournament. You’re not winning a tournament every week, so I’m really happy,” the 24-year-old said.
