Gastao Elias clinched his first ATP Challenger Tour title since 2017 Campinas, Brazil, by winning the €31,440 Oeiras Open 4 held at the Complexo Desportivo Nacional do Jamor in Oeiras, Portugal. The 30-year-old Portuguese rallied from a set down to overcome Danish young gun Holger Rune 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final.

Unseeded Elias, a winner of six ITF Pro Circuit crowns, beat local wild card entries Luis Faria and Pedro Araujo, as well as Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina and compatriot Nuno Borges en-route to the championship match.

Elias broke Rune’s serve five times and won 52 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in two hours and 46 minutes.

“Quarterfinals, semi-finals, final and now champion… It was what I wanted for this week and I am very happy to end this series of tournaments like that,” said Elias.

“I feel pretty good to earn this victory in a match that I felt was getting too complicated. It could have been simpler if I had taken advantage of my chances in the first set, but it became very tough in the end.”

The Oeiras Open 4 was the fourth ATP Challenger Tour tournament organized by the Portuguese Tennis Federation between March and May. By lifting his eighth ATP Challenger career trophy, Elias pocketed on home soil €4,400 in prize money as well as 50 ATP Ranking points.

On Saturday, Jesper de Jong and Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands clinched the doubles title. The duo defeated Julian Lenz from Germany and Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador 6-1, 7-6(3). The encounter lasted 68 minutes.
