BUCARAMANGA, January 31, 2016

Gerald Melzer captured the $50,000 Claro Open ATP Challenger title in Bucaramanga on Sunday. The 25-year-old Austrian upset second seed Paolo Lorenzi, winning the final 6-3, 6-1. Melzer won 77% of his first service points and converted five of his ten break point chances to prevail in one hour and 15 minutes.

“You don’t win titles every day. It was difficult in the first part of the tournament but little-by-little I found my rhythm. I am very happy to be the champion,” the Austrian told.

Melzer already lifted his second Challenger trophy of the season following his triumph in Mendoza two weeks ago. The Vienna resident wins $7,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP ranking points to reach a new career high 121st position on Monday.
