Andrea Pellegrino has captured his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 24-year-old Italian was crowned champion of the Roma Garden Open, the first of two back-to-back €44,820 clay-court events held at the Tennis Club Garden in Rome. Pellegrino rallied past No. 5 seed Hugo Gaston of France 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in Sunday’s singles final.
Wild card entry Pellegrino battled his way to the title match with wins in the bottom half of the draw over No. 8 seed Steven Diez of Canada, Italian qualifier Flavio Cobolli, No. 4 seed Sebastian Ofner from Austria and Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic.
The World No. 288, a winner of five singles trophies on the ITF Pro Circuit, broke Gaston’s serve five times and won 55 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 50 minutes.
Pellegrino pocketed on home soil €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.

On Saturday, Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul clinched the doubles title. The French duo defeated Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi and Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru 7-6(5), 7-5 in the final. The encounter lasted one hour and 48 minutes.
Doumbia and Reboul split €2,670 in prize money and earned 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
