Jenson Brooksby

ORLANDO/STARNBERG, April 19, 2021

Following his maiden triumph in Potchefstroom, South Africa in February, #NextGenATP US-American Jenson Brooksby clinched his second title on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the Orlando Open presented by Nemours. The $52,080 ATP Challenger Tour tournament was hosted by the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Brooksby defeated his compatriot and No. 5 seed Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final. The 20-year-old California native didn’t drop a set en-route to the championship match and broke Kudla’s serve four times to secure victory in one hour and 13 minutes.

“I knew going in that Denis is a very good player. But I was feeling confident and staying physical to the forehand. I tried to move him around and keep the ball low. He likes to attack as well, but I think I did a good job of stopping him today. He wasn’t in rhythm and I think I caused that,” Brooksby told broadcaster Mike Cation, quoted by the ATP Challenger Tour website.

Brooksby earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points, cracking the Top 200 for the first time in his young career.

“The mindset I have and the mindset of my team is not looking at the ranking. We don’t read into any of that stuff. It’s just about taking it day-by-day and doing what’s in my control to get better. The results will take care of themselves. I’m happy with the year so far and I’m happy to make such big progress, especially after a tough 2020 for me. I’m focusing on the right things consistently and I know I’ll keep getting better.”
