Clezar Wins All-Brazilian-Affair In Rio

Two Brazilians headlined second round action on Thursday at the $50,000 Vivo Tennis Cup in Rio de Janeiro when Guilherme Clezar upset third seed Rogerio Dutra Silva, winning 6-3, 6-2.

The 23-year-old from Porto Alegre saved all of the four break points he faced, converting three of his own to prevail in one hour and 13 minutes. Clezar will face eighth seed Andrej Martin next. The Slovakian rallied back from a set down to overcome Guido Andreozzi 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 19 minutes.

The tournament’s number four Facundo Bagnis also advanced to the quarterfinals through a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Christian Lindell. The world number 109 from Argentina fired 10 aces and won 78% of his first service points to finishe the encounter after one hour and 56 minutes. Bagnis will take on Gastao Elias next. The fifth seeded Portuguese cruised past Pedro Cachin, winning 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 13 minutes.

With sixth favourite Facundo Arguello another Argentine made his way into the final eight. The 23-year-old from Córdoba defeated Brazilian wild card Pedro Sakamoto, winning 74% of his first service points to prevail after one hour and 45 minutes 6-4, 7-6. Arguello will meet another local wild card next, as Thiago Monteiro beat Axel Michon 6-4, 7-6 in one hour and 42 minutes.
