CANBERRA, January 14, 2016

Friday’s semifinals are set to feature some quality tennis, with four top 100 players to play for a place in the final of the $75,000 ATP Canberra Challenger. Top seed Paolo Lorenzi will face fourth seed Marcel Granollers, while third seed Daniel Munoz de la Nava will play fifth seed Ivan Dodig.

In Thursday’s quarterfinal action, Lorenzi was able to comfortably take care of seventh seed Evgeny Donskoy. After winning the first set 6-4, Lorenzi cruised to victory in the second, breaking Donskoy three times to take it 6-1 in one hour and 24 minutes.

In the match of the day, Dodig faced second seed Santiago Giraldo. Giraldo went up an early break, and served for the set 5-4 but was unable to close it out. Dodig broke back and forced a tiebreak, taking it 7-1. Dodig continued his momentum in the second set, breaking Giraldo twice to secure his place in the semifinals after one hour and 29 minutes.

The other quarterfinals were both affected by retirements. Granollers took the first set against Quentin Halys, before Halys was forced to retire with heat exhaustion. Halys had spent over 5 hours on court in his previous two matches in scorching temperatures. Munoz de la Nava also took the first set off sixth seed Diego Schwartzman before Schwartzman was forced to retire with a hand injury.
