Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti has followed up his breakthrough week at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome by lifting his first trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 18-year-old from Carrara defeated Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro 7-6(2), 7-6(5) in Saturday’s singles final of the €88,520 Internazionali di tennis Città di Forli.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Circolo Tennis Villa Carpena in Northern Italy, both players lost their service twice but Musetti won five points more than his opponent to secure victory in just under two hours of play.

“It’s amazing to win here in Italy,” said Musetti, quoted by the ATP Challenger website. “I played against many Top 100 players, but the key was to build on my week in Rome. I was nervous today and I managed the pressure well. I think I played a really good match. It was not easy, but I focused on every point and single detail that makes the difference.”
Musetti has become the first player born in 2002 to win an ATP Challenger tournament. He pocketed on home soil €12,500 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points, rising to a new career-high of World No. 138 on Monday.
Brkic/Cacic take doubles title
Earlier in the day, Tomislav Brkic from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Nikola Cacic of Serbia took the doubles title. In a final between two unseeded the teams, the pair fought past Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan and Italian Andrea Vavassori, rallying 3-6, 7-5, 10-3. The encounter lasted one hour and 31 minutes.
