Taberner Wins Maiden Challenger Title At Iasi Open

Carlos Taberner has clinched his maiden title on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 23-year-old Spaniard defeated Mathias Bourgue of France 6-4, 7-6(4) in Sunday’s singles final of the Concord Iasi Open held at the City Base “Ciric” in Romania’s second-largest city.

Taberner advanced to the championship match through wins over compatriot Nicola Kuhn, Polish qualifier Kacper Zuk, Adrian Menendez Maceiras of Spain and Spanish young gun Jaume Munar. In his third Challenger career final, the No. 5 seed of the €88,520 clay-court event saved all four break point he faced and broke his opponent’s serve one time to prevail after one hour and 54 minutes.

Taberner finished runner-up to Maximilian Marterer at the Banja Luka Challenger in Bosnia and Herzegova 2017 and to Cedrik-Marcel Stebe at the Sibiu Open in Romania the same year. By lifting the trophy in Iasi, the Valencia native pocketed €12,250 in prize money as well as 100 ATP Ranking points. Taberner will rise 49 places to a new career-high World No. 148 when the new ATP Rankings will be released.
