QUIMPER, January 30, 2020

Guillermo Garcia Lopez started his title bid at the €46,600 Open Quimper Bretagne Occidentale with a hard-fought win. The top seed from Spain emerged victorious from Wednesday’s second-round clash with 33-year-old German Tobias Kamke, winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Garcia Lopez struck 15 aces and won 59 per cent of his first-service points to seal victory in two hours and 12 minutes. The 36-year-old lost his first two matches of the season at the ATP Challenger in Canberra (Bendigo) as well as in the qualifying of the Australian Open and will next take on No. 14 seed Zdenek Kolar. The World No. 227 from the Czech Republic fought past Frenchman Manuel Guinard 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 after one hour and 42 minutes.

Three players, who at least made it into the quarterfinals at last week’s Open Blot Rennes, were forced to retire in their respective second-round matches at the Parc des Expositions Quimper Cornouaille. Arthur Rinderknech of France, who lifted his maiden Challenger trophy in Rennes last Sunday, had clinched the first set against No. 4 seeded Frenchman Enzo Couacaud before he stopped playing at 2-5 in the second due to abdominal pain. Couacaud will next take on compatriot Mathias Bourgue.

No. 2 seed Danilo Petrovic of Serbia retired against Cem Ilkel from Turkey trailing 6-7(6), 1-3 with a leg left injury and French teenager Kyrian Jacquet also suffered from abdominal pain in his match against No. 6 seed Alexey Vatutin from Russia and ended the match after the first game of the final set. Ilkel will oppose 13th favourite Constant Lestienne of France and Vatutin will play Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic in third round.
