The remaining four second round matches took place on a cloudy Thursday at the Cary Tennis Championships with third seed John-Patrick Smith headlining the action.

The Australian world number 111, however, lost to Peter Polansky 3-6, 3-6. The latter saved all two break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own to advance to his first quarterfinals on ATP Challenger level since June 2014 in Manta. The encounter lasted 66 minutes.

Polansky will face Dennis Novikov next. The seventh seeded US-American won 73% of his first service points, winning 6-2, 6-4 against Damon Gooch in one hour and two minutes.

Blaz Rola

Fourth favourite Blaz Rola defeated Brayden Schnur, winning 6-2, 7-5. The 24-year-old Slovenian fired eight aces and won 74% of his first Service points to seal victory in one hour and 17 minutes.

Rola will play Kevin King in the round of the final eight, who knocked out eighth seed Connor Smith in an all-US-American-encounter. The 24-year-old from Georgia hit five aces and won 60% of his first as well as second Service points converting his first match point after one hour and 59 minutes.
