Majchzrak upsets Montanes, Samper-Montana advances to Copa Sevilla’s second round

SEVILLE, September 7, 2015

The first round of the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Copa Sevilla started at the Real Club de Tenis Betis with two seeded players crashing out on Monday.

Kamil Majchrzak upset fourth favourite Albert Montaῆés, winning 6-1, 6-4 against the Spanish veteran. The only 19-year-old Polish hit six aces, won 79% of his first service points and four of his five break point chances to prevail after one hour and ten minutes. Majchrzak advanced to the second round of an ATP Challenger event for the only second time this season after he had made it to this stage in Wroclaw in February.

The teenager will face with David Vega Hernandez another local player next. The 21-year-old Spanish qualifier defeated his compatriot Agustin Boje-Ordonez with 6-4, 6-1 in 73 minutes.

Seventh seed Jan Mertl also lost his opening match. The world number 205 from the Czech Republic suffered a 4-6, 6-1, 1-6 defeat against Flavio Cipolla. The 31-year-old Italian withstood seven aces from his opponent, winning 72% of his first service points to seal victory in two hours and six minutes.

The only seeded player, who made it to the second round Monday was Jordi Samper-Montana. The tournament’s number eight won the all-Spanish-affair against Roberto Ortega-Olmedo 6-3, 6-3. Samper-Montana converted five of his 11 break points to close the match after one hour and 22 minutes and will play the winner of the encounter between Georgi Rumenov Payakov and David Perez Sanz next.

Lamine Ouahab rallied back from a set down, winning 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 against Russian qualifier Ivan Gakhov in one hour and 31 minutes.

The 30-year-old Moroccan, who practices in Barcelona, will face the winner of the match between Spanish qualifier Mario Vilella Martinez and sixth seed Renzo Olivo from Argentina.

In the evening hours, Axel Michon knocked out Spanish youngster Jaume Munar through a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The world number 297 from France was more solid on his second serve, winning 72% and converted five of his eight break points finishing the match in one hour and 25 minutes. Michon will play the winner of the encounter between top-seed and reigning champion Pablo Carreῆo-Busta and Matteo Bortolotti. The Spanish world number 54 and the 24-year-old Italian will meet on Tuesday not before 9pm.
