MUNICH, April 29, 2019

Main draw action at the BMW Open by FWU kicked off on Monday with only two matches played due to bad weather. On a wet and uncomfortably chilly day in Munich, Taro Daniel was the first player to book his spot in the second round of the ATP 250 clay-court event.

The 26-year-old from Japan defeated French young gun Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4. Daniel outpointed his opponent 68-61 after one hour and 46 minutes. Next up will be either No. 7 seed Guido Pella of Argentina or Mischa Zverev from Germany.

Later in the afternoon, No. 8 seed Marton Fucsovics and Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego warmed up the crowd with an entertaining encounter. The 27-year-old Hungarian broke serve five times to secure a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(8) victory after three hours and four minutes.

Play resumes on Tuesday featuring a packed schedule with 10 first-round singles matches.

Munich Moments

• Alexander Zverev, who has returned to Munich in an attempt to pull off a hat-trick of titles, made a first public appearance at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos. Accompanied by Marcelo Melo, the 22-year-old practiced on the show-court, located right in front of the club house, with Christian Garin from Chile.

• Andreas Mies and Kevin Krawietz seemed to enjoy Kids’ Day, as the German doubles team was questioned by children. The pair will start their Munich campaign against compatriots Matthias Bachinger and Peter Gojowczyk, who entered the doubles draw with a wild card.

• The oldest player in the draw, Philipp Kohlschreiber, has heavy championship experience in Munich. The 35-year-old debuted at the event in 2002 and lifted the trophy on home soil in 2007, 2012 and 2016. Kohlschreiber will open his title bid on Tuesday against Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. It will be the third match on Center Court.
