U.S. Wins Second Consecutive Junior Fed Cup Title

BUDAPEST, October 1, 2018

Coco Gauff and Alexa Noel clinched victory for the U.S. Junior Fed Cup Team over Ukraine in Sunday’s final in Budapest, Hungary, giving the United States its second consecutive Junior Fed Cup title.

Gauff,14, from Delray Beach, forced the deciding doubles rubber by defeating Dasha Lopatetskaya 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 after 16-year-old Noel from Summit fell to Lyubov Kostenko 6-4, 6-1. The pair came from behind to win the doubles match 5-7, 6-4, 11-9. 15-year-old Connie Ma of Dublin, California was the third member of the team.

The was the fifth consecutive finals appearance for the U.S. Junior Fed Cup team and today’s victory was the team’s fifth title in the past 11 years (2008, 2012, 2014, 2017-18).

Spain wins Junior Davis Cup

The Spanish team won the Junior Davis Cup beating France 2-1 in Sunday’s final. Carlos Alcaraz, Pablo Llamas and Mario Gonzalez were part of the squad adding a sixth title for Spain in the competition.

The final was decided in the doubles rubber with the victory of the pair formed by Carlos Alcaraz and Pablo Llamas over Martin Breysach and Lilian Mamousez, 6-2, 6-3. Previously, Alcaraz saved one match point against Harold Mayot, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, which leveled score after the initial defeat of Mario González against Lilian Mamousez 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

The last title won by Spain in the competition took place five years ago with a team consisting of Jaume Munar, Pedro Martínez Portero and Álvaro López San Martín. The previous ones came in the 1991, 1998, 2002 and 2004 editions, with players such as Rafael Nadal, Marcel Granollers, Roberto Bautista, Marc Lopez, Tommy Robredo and Albert Costa, among others.
