Gian Marco Moroni clinched his maiden title on the ITF Pro Circuit, hoisting the trophy of the XVIV Circuit Tennis Català held on the clay courts of the Club de Tennis Reus Monterols. The 20-year-old unseeded Italian defeated No. 4 seed Pol Toledo Bague of Spain in Sunday’s singles final 6-3, 6-1.

Moroni won 76 per cent of his first service points and broke serve five times to prevail after one hour and 20 minutes. The Rome native, who is currently ranked on a career high World No. 522, won the $15,000 Futures event without dropping a set and earns $1,944 in prize money as well as 18 ATP ranking points.

Moroni knocked out top seed and former World No. 26 Lukas Rosol in the quarterfinals. The Czech veteran has returned to the courts for the first time since Moscow in October last year.

On Saturday, Spaniard Jaume Pla Malfeito captured the doubles title alongside Alexander Zhurbin of Russia, rallying past the tournament’s top duo of Javier Barranco Cosan of Spain and Italy’s Raul Brancaccio 4-6, 7-6, 13-11.
