Jakub Paul Powers Into Singles Final, Takes Oberentfelden Doubles Title

Swiss teenager Jakub Paul continued his run of good form with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over French qualifier Maxime Tchoutakian on Saturday to reach his first ITF Pro Circuit singles final at the Tennis Pro Open Aargau in Oberentfelden.

The 18-year-old, who entered main draw with a wild card, capitalized on all of his three break point opportunities to prevail in one hour 17 minutes.

“I am very pleased with my performance today,” Paul told afterwards. “I was a bit nervous at the beginning, as it is pretty special for me to play here at home, but the longer the match lasted the more relaxed I became. I didn’t serve so well today but was a able to gain many points with my second service. I am very happy to be through to the final.”

In his maiden title match, Paul will Tobias Simon. The unseeded German fired 22 aces, winning 74 per cent of his first service points to seal a  6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory against Frenchman Gregoire Jacq. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes. Paul and Simon will meet for the first time. The latter eyes clinching his third ITF Pro Circuit trophy.

Later in the afternoon, Jakub Paul was back in action teaming up with fellow Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler to claim the doubles title. The tandem saved two match points in the tie-break of the second set to rally past the all-Czech-combination of Jan Mertl and Michael Vrbensky 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. The final lasted one hour and 15 minutes.
