Pella opens Vicenza campaign succesfully, Riba upsets Gombos

The remaining five first round matches as well as three encounters of the second round were scheduled on Day 3 at the ATP Challenger in Vicenza.

Guido Pella, who has reached two straight Challenger finals, winning in Sao Paulo, before falling to Alexander Zverev in the Heilbronn title match, also had a successful start into his Italian campaign. The fourth-seeded Argentine capitalized on all of his three break points, knocking out Italian qualifier Matteo Viola 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 11 minutes.

With Pedro Cachin another Argentine had a winning start into the main draw. The 20-year-old qualifier won 79% of his first service points, beating Remi Boutillier 6-3, 7-5 in 80 minutes.

Albert Montaῆes and Inigo Cervantes set an all-Spanish-second round affair. The latter hit six aces in his match against Thomas Fabbiano, winning 7-6, 6-4 in one hour and 53 minutes. Montaῆes had to go the distance in his encounter with José Hernandez-Fernant. The fifth seed rallied back from a set down to overcome the man from the Dominican Republic after two hours and 21 minutes, winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Both Spaniards will meet each other only for the second time on the tour with Montaῆes leading 1-0 in head to head records. The 34-year-old from Barcelona won the previous meeting in Cordenons 2012 in straight sets.

Pere Riba, who is playing his only second tournament of the season, following a first round qualifying loss against Denys Molchanov at Roland Garros, upset Vicenza’s number two-seed Norbert Gombos. The 27-year-old Spaniard fired eight aces, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in two hours and three minutes.

Top-seed Facundo Bagnis has already advanced to the quarterfinals winning 6-3, 6-4 against Guilherme Clezar after one hour and 17 minutes.

The Argentine is going to face Thiemo de Bakker next. The seventh-seed Dutchman beat Renzo Olivo, winning 6-4, 6-0 in exactly one hour of Play.

The tournament’s number six also made it into the quarterfinals. John Millman beat Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 6-2 in 68 minutes.
