#NextGenATP Frenchman Corentin Moutet headlined Wednesday’s second round action at the €106,500 Open Brest Arena Crédit Agricole fighting past compatriot and qualifier Tristan Lamasine 4-4, 6-7, 6-3.

Moutet was more solid on his second serve, winnig 55 per cent of the points and broke his opponent five times to prevail after two hours and 38 minutes.

“It was very tough match today,” Moutet told afterwards. “Those kind of matches help you to gain some experience, as you have a lot of very close situations. Tristan played very well but I was able to improve my game in the final set.”

The 18-year-old from Neuilly-sur-Seine captured three ITF Futures titles this season and will next challenge Gleb Sakharov. The World No. 170 from France knocked off the tournament’s number six Laslo Djere of Serbia 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The encounter lasted one hour and 48 minutes.

Second seed Marius Copil also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Italian Lucas Vanni. The 27-year-old from Romania struck eight aces, winning 83 per cent of his first service points to finish the match after one hour and 37 minutes. Copil awaits either Matteo Berrettini of Italy or French wild card Ugo Humbert.

Top Seed Reaches Second Round

Later in the evening, top seed Daniil Medvedev opened his title bid with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 first round win over Matteo Donati from Italy. The 21-year-old Russian, who qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, fired 14 aces to advance in one hour and 30 minutes. Next up for Medvedev will be Benjamin Bonzi.

Imaning champion Yannick Hanfmann fell in the opening round to Mathias Bourgue of France. The 25-year-old German, who is sitting on a personal career high World No. 114 after lifting the trophy of the inaugural Wolffkran Open, lost 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 in one hour and 45 minutes.
