Cagla Buyukakcay headlined Wednesday’s first round action of the Wimbledon Qualifying at the Bank of England Sports Club, fighting past Harriet Dart from Great Britain 4-6, 6-3, 9-7.

The 27-year-old from Turkey saved two match points and broke serve four times to prevail after two hours and 33 minutes. Buyukakcay will next take on Anastasia Potapova from Russia.

The Adana native could qualify for her second Wimbledon main draw after 2016. Buyukakcay will be joined in the second round by her compatriot Ipek Soylu, who beat Valentina Grammatikopoulou 6-4, 6-3.

Dart has received a wild card into the doubles main draw, teaming up with close friend and fellow Brit Katy Dunne.

“I’m super excited to be playing in my first Wimbledon main draw,” the British number seven said.

“We were joking the other day that we’d play a big seed so we can play on a big court, but we’ll see. We’re there to win and do the best we can.”

Michelle Larcher de Brito also had to go the distance, winning 6-3, 6-7, 8-6 against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in two hours and four minutes. In another marathon match, Sachia Vickery from the United States battled past Georgina Garcia Perez of Spain 6-3, 3-6, 9-7. The encounter lasted two hours and 17 minutes.

While a number of matches were in the process of getting suspended, Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia, the top seed in Ladies’ Qualifying, stayed on court to wrap up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lina Gjorcheska from Macedonia in 65 minutes.

Garin And Jarry Into Final Round

Two players from Chile made it to the third round of the men’s competition. Christian Garin rallied past US-American Bjorn Fratangelo 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 and Nicolas Jarry knocked out 16th seed Konstantin Kravchuk of Russia 7-5, 4-6, 11-9.

Garin will next take on John-Parick Smith from Australia and Jarry will play Denis Novikov from the United States for a spot in the main draw.
