PARIS, May 23, 2017

The women stepped into action on Tuesday, kicking off their 2017 Roland Garros qualifying draw headlined by Sara Errani from Italy. The 30-year-old finished runner-up to Maria Sharapova in Paris five years ago but was sidelined by injury problems in recent times.

“When you are home and there are good tournament and you can’t play, it’s really tough. It’s worse having an injury than losing matches,” Errani told after her return in Indian Wells earlier this season.

On Court 17, Errani reached the second round, easing past Sara Cakarevic from France 6-1, 6-0  in one hour and 30 minutes. Next up for Errani will be Veronika Kudermetova of Bulgaria.

Third seed Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil defeated Silvia Espinosa-Soler of Spain 6-4, 6-2. The 20-year-old leftie will next take on Croatian Jana Fett, who beat Fanny Stollar from Hungary 7-6, 6-3.
