WROCLAW, February 28, 2017

Top seed Paul-Henri Mathieu headlined Tuesday’s first round action at the €85,000 Wroclaw Open. The World No. 99 and lone player ranked inside the top 100 defeated Polish teenager Kacper Zuk 6-3, 6-4.

Mathieu sent down nine aces, saved all of the four break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own to seal victory in one hour and 10 minutes. Next up for Mathieu will be Austrian Sebastian Ofner.

Third favourite Kenny de Schepper eased past Filip Krajinovic 6-1, 6-2. The World No. 142 from France didn’t face a break point, converting four of his own to advance in only 44 minutes. De Schepper will next face Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands, who rallied past Salvatore Caruso of Italy 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament’s number eight Jürgen Melzer withstood 20 aces from German qualifier Mats Moraing, winning 6-4, 6-4. The Austrian veteran finished the encounter in 62 minutes. Melzer will either face Marek Jaloviec from the Czech Republic or local hero Jerzy Janowicz, who captured the ATP Challenger title in Bergamo last Sunday.

With Michal Przysiezny a Polish player made it into the second round. The 33-year-old Wroclaw resident came back from a set down to overcome Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, firing 17 aces in the one hour and 49 minutes encounter.
