Tom Gentzsch continued his fine run of form by reaching the quarterfinals of the Tenerife Challenger 2. The 22-year-old German, who is coming off a runner-up finish on home soil at last week’s Koblenz Tennis Open knocked out top seed Francesco Maestrelli 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.
Gentzsch struck seven aces and won 82 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 41 minutes.

“I knew it’s going to be a tough match today, as he played the final here in Tenerife last week and was confident on these courts,” said Gentzsch, who is sitting on a career-high ranking of world No. 251. “I just tried to keep my cool, focusing on my own game. I gave my best in every rally and it worked out pretty well. I am very happy.”
Travaglia marches on
Stefano Travaglia also didn’t show any signs of slowing down. One week after reaching the semifinals, the 34-year-old Italian secured his place in the quarterfinals of the Tenerife Challenger 2 with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Czech lucky loser Hynek Barton. It was a largely one-sided contest, even if a couple of tricky moments briefly tested the Italian, who handled them with authority.
After a three-set battle against Abdullah Shelbayh in the previous round, Travaglia needed just 69 minutes to dismiss Barton.
“My coach Alessandro Motti and I prepared the match well on the day off, and I think I executed the plan from the start,” said Travaglia. “I kept a high level throughout the match and in the second set I broke at a crucial moment. The key to these results in January and February is the work done in the off-season. I feel more mature on court, and everything is coming together.”
In the quarterfinals, Travaglia will face Spain’s Alejandro Moro Canas, who defeated Benjamin Hassan 6-1, 6-4. They have met only once before, in the semifinals of the 2024 Rome Challenger, where the Spaniard prevailed.
“That match was on clay, so it will be different here,” Travaglia noted. “But he always plays well in Tenerife, so we’ll need to prepare carefully and then give our best.”
