GUIA DE ISORA/STARNBERG, February 9, 2026
The main draw of the Tenerife Challenger 2 got off to a positive start for Italy with Jacopo Berrettini claiming a straight-sets win in the all-Italian derby against Jacopo Vasamì. The 27-year-old came through 6–3, 6–3 to open his campaign at the second tournament organized by MEF Tennis Events on the courts of the Abama Tennis Academy.
“I’m happy in many ways,” Berrettini said after the match. “I managed my energy well and felt in control of the rallies. Vasamì’s serve can take away your rhythm and confidence, but I handled the match well.”
Almost at the same time, Gabriele Piraino secured his place in the main draw by winning the final round of qualifying against top seed Hynek Barton of the Czech Republic, prevailing 6–4, 7–6(5). Piraino will now face Lloyd Harris in the first round. With his qualification, the number of Italian players in the main draw rises to seven.
There was no such luck in qualifying for Federico Bondioli, who was beaten 6–3, 6–2 by Britain’s Giles Hussey.
On Tuesday, Francesco Maestrelli will return to action as the top seed once again, following his run to the final last week. He will face qualifier Sergio Callejon Hernandez. Elsewhere, Lorenzo Giustino is set to take on the Tenerife Challenger 1 champion Daniel Merida, Stefano Travaglia will meet Abdullah Shelbayh, and Raul Brancaccio will face Pol Martin Tiffon.
