LISBON/STARNBERG, December 15, 2025
The 101st edition of the Portuguese National Tennis Championships / Taça Guilherme Pinto Basto takes place this week, from December 15 to 21, at the indoor hard courts of the Jamor Tennis Complex in Oeiras, with Jaime Faria and Francisca Jorge emerging as the leading contenders for the singles titles.
With a total prize money of €25,000, the country’s premier national tennis event brings the curtain down on a season that featured 49 international tournaments in Portugal (21 women’s and 28 men’s events).
Men’s draw: Faria and Elias lead the field
In the men’s competition, the spotlight is on two of the eight Portuguese players who have reached the ATP Top 100: Jaime Faria (currently No. 152, after peaking at No. 87 in February) and Gastao Elias (No. 377, nine years after reaching a career-high No. 57).
At just 22 years old, Faria enjoyed the best season of his career, competing in the main draws of all four Grand Slams — qualifying in Melbourne and London, direct entry in Paris, and as a lucky loser in New York. He also reached his first ATP Tour quarterfinals at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, a feat he repeated the following week at the ATP 250 in Santiago.
This will be the second time Faria competes as the top seed. In 2022, he was upset in the semifinals by eventual champion Fabio Coelho. In 2023, as the second seed, he lost the final to close friend Henrique Rocha, while in 2024 he withdrew at the last minute due to a left wrist injury.
Like Faria, Gastao Elias is also chasing his first national title. Now 35 years old, the player from Lourinha returns to the Championships for the first time since 2020 and has never previously reached the final.
The group of leading contenders is completed by Francisco Rocha (No. 779) and Tiago Torres (No. 785), both with collegiate backgrounds in the United States and both having achieved career-high rankings in 2025.
With none of the previous champions entered, the men’s event is guaranteed to produce a fourth consecutive first-time winner.
Women’s draw: Francisca Jorge targets history
The women’s competition tells a very different story, as Francisca Jorge returns to Jamor as the eight-time defending champion. Ranked No. 216 in the WTA rankings (after reaching No. 176 in July 2024), the 25-year-old from Guimaraes is already the third most successful Portuguese woman in the history of the Championships.
This year, she will attempt to equal Sofia Prazeres’ record of nine consecutive titles (1990–1998). If successful, only Leonor Peralta — who won ten straight titles between 1967 and 1976, plus three more later — would remain ahead of her.
Five of Francisca Jorge’s eight titles, including the last four, were won against her younger sister. At 21 years old, Matilde Jorge (currently No. 272, after peaking at No. 212) returns as the second seed.
During the 2025 international season, Francisca Jorge collected her seventh career singles title, successfully defending her crown in Guimaraes, reaching additional finals in Montemor-o-Novo and Poitiers, and securing her return to Grand Slam competition at the Australian Open.
Matilde Jorge claimed the biggest singles title of her career in Montemor-o-Novo and, alongside finals appearances in Guimaraes and Bistrița, reached a career-high ranking in September, moving close to her Grand Slam debut.
The women’s top four seeds are completed by Angelina Voloshchuk (No. 461) and Ana Filipa Santos (No. 946), both of whom have previously reached the semifinals.
Tournament schedule
The main draws begin on Wednesday, following two days of qualifying, which is fully subscribed this year. The first matches of the tournament are scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
