Qualifiers Complete German Open Main Draw In Hamburg

Thiago Monteiro advanced to the main draw of the German Open

HAMBURG, July 10, 2016

Four of the seven seeds qualified on Sunday for the main draw of the German Open Championships. Top seed Thiago Monteiro battled past Daniel Masur under the tent roof on centre court, winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. The 22-year-old from Brazil, who is currently ranked on a career high 126th position saved all of the six break points he faced, converting one of his own to seal victory in two hours and 46 minutes. Monteiro will take on Mischa Zverev in the opening round.

The qualifying’s number three Steven Diez defeated Matteo Viola 6-4, 6-4. The world number 321 from Canada won 59% of his first service points to advance in one hour and 45 minutes. Diez eyes on winning his first tour level match in his fourth appearance, facing German wild card Louis Wessels.

Sixth seed Jan Satral ousted Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 19 minutes to qualify for his maiden main draw on tour level. The 25-year-old Czech, who has already captured one ITF Future title this season and lifted the ATP Challenger trophy of the Marburg Open last week, will play Nicolas Almagro.

Fourth favourite Daniil Medvedev completes the main draw, beating Czech veteran Jan Mertl 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 22 minutes. The world number 228 from Russia will square off with Jan-Lennard Struff.

Main draw starts on Monday. World number 22 Philipp Kohlschreiber is the top seed at this year’s ATP 500 event. The 32-year-old German looks to continue his outstanding play on home soil. He has won five of his seven career ATP World Tour titles in Germany, including his victory at the BMW Open in Munich in May. He also reached the final of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart as well as the stage of the final eight of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. Kohlschreiber will start his title bid against Carlos Berlocq.
