MONTEVIDEO/STARNBERG, November 12, 2025
Franco Roncadelli reached the second round of the Uruguay Open for the first time in his career after defeating 2022 champion Genaro Olivieri 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 32 minutes. The Uruguayan will next face Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera, the tournament’s eighth seed.
The match concluded under heavy rain, but the enthusiastic local fans remained in their seats to witness the first singles victory by a Uruguayan player at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in several years. Barrios Vera, ranked World No. 122, had earlier eased past Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Prado Angelo 6-4, 6-1.

Upsets headline the day
Two major surprises shook up the opening round on Tuesday as Alex Barrena and Alvaro Guillen Meza eliminated defending champion Tristan Boyer and top seed Sebastian Baez, respectively.
Guillen Meza of Ecuador produced the biggest shock of the day, ousting Baez 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and ten minutes. The 21-year-old, who captured the ATP Challenger title in Santos earlier this year, his third career crown, outplayed the Argentine, who had reached a career-high ranking of World No. 18 in July and owns seven ATP titles.
Farewell to the defending champion
Argentina’s Alex Barrena, ranked World No. 176, knocked out last year’s champion Tristan Boyer 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-1 after two hours and 26 minutes. Born in Buenos Aires in 2002, Barrena ended the US-American’s title defense and advanced to face Chilean Cristian Garin, who opened with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Argentine Andrea Collarini.
The match will be the first-ever meeting between Barrena and Garin, currently ranked No. 105 but a former World No. 17 with five ATP titles to his name – Houston and Munich (2019), Cordoba and Rio de Janeiro (2020), and Santiago (2021).
Barrena comes into Montevideo in excellent form, having claimed his first two Challenger titles this season in Tucuman and Santa Cruz, where he defeated none other than Franco Roncadelli in the final.
