Another milestone for German junior tennis: Max Schoenhaus has become the first German player ever to win the ITF Junior Finals.
In Chengdu, China, the 18-year-old triumphed over the world’s best young players, capping off an outstanding season that has taken him to the top of the junior rankings. In the final, Schoenhaus dominated Romania’s Yannick Theodor Alexandrescou with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory.
A finalist at the French Open, a semifinalist at Wimbledon, a quarterfinalist at the US Open, and now the champion at the prestigious year-end event for the world’s top eight juniors — Schoenhaus ends the season as a Top 5 player in the ITF Junior Rankings. His success underscores his impressive development under the guidance of the German National Federation’s (DTB) national coaches Philipp Petzschner and Björn Simon, both of whom were on site in Chengdu.
“Max has taken a big step forward this year and played an incredible season,” said Petzschner. “This title is a well-deserved reward for his hard work, passion, and attitude on and off the court. It’s great to see how he seized this opportunity, and I’m convinced this is just the beginning.”
The ITF Junior Finals are the junior equivalent of the ATP and WTA Finals. Since their inception in 2015, the event has featured four future Grand Slam champions and many players who later broke into the world’s Top 10. For the first time this year, the champions received 1,000 ranking points — the same amount awarded for a Junior Grand Slam title.
