World No. 144 Roman Burruchaga emerged as the champion of the YPF Buenos Aires Challenger presented by La Roche-Posay. Maintaining the same assured tennis that had carried him through the week without dropping a set, the 23-year-old from Buenos Aires defeated Alex Barrena 7-6(4), 6-3 to lift the trophy at the 10th edition of the event organised by Torneos at the Racket Club in Palermo.

In front of a packed stadium, one of the defining moments of the final was Burruchaga’s comeback from a slow start in the opening set. “The first four games were very bad because I started nervous, but I managed to turn it around in time to take the set. I’m very happy with the title, winning it in front of my family and friends gives it extra meaning,” said the champion in his post-match press conference. Burruchaga rallied from 0-4 down in the first set to take it 7-6(4) in the tie-break.

In the second set, the sixth seed continued the high level with which he closed the first, breaking his opponent immediately to lead 2-0. Barrena recovered the break in the next game to level at 2-2, and the closing stages were marked by frequent service breaks. Barrena broke once more, but Burruchaga twice, ultimately sealing victory on his own serve.

With the win, Burruchaga earned his second ATP Challenger Tour career title following his maiden triumph in Piracicaba, Brazil last year and became the seventh Argentine to claim the YPF Buenos Aires Challenger title. He will rise to No. 130 in the ATP Rankings, just 13 spots shy of his career-high achieved in May of this year
