SAN FRANCISCO/STARNBERG, September 20, 2025
Team Europe made a strong start to the 2025 Laver Cup on Friday at the Chase Center in San Francisco, racing to a 3-1 advantage over Team World after the opening day.
Casper Ruud and Jakub Mensik won their singles matches before Brazilian teen sensation Joao Fonseca made a successful debut for Team World, winning 7-6(3), 7-6(8) against Flavio Cobolli.
“I knew it was going to be a difficult match, and I knew how important it was. I’m happy with the way I was able to manage to stay positive during the match,” said Fonseca. “I like to play aggressive, so I wanted to suffocate him, as we say in tennis, not let him breathe, don’t give him space.”
In the final match of the day, Mensik and Carlos Alcaraz launched their doubles partnership with a straight sets sweep 7-6(7), 6-4 over Alex Michelsen and Taylor Fritz.
“With Carlos, I think we were playing really well and completing each other,” Mensik said. “I am really happy I brought to the team two points today.”
