STARNBERG, September 14, 2025

The 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers Second Round reached an exhilarating conclusion on Sunday as Belgium, Czechia and Spain claimed stunning victories to seal their places in the Final 8 in Bologna (18-23 November).

The results mean the full Final 8 line-up is Italy (2024 world champions), Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Czechia, France, Germany and Spain.

The draw for the Davis Cup Final 8 will take place in Piazza Maggiore in Bologna on Wednesday 17 September at 1200 CET. It will be live streamed at Daviscup.com.

Raphael Collignon was Belgium’s hero as he held off an Australia comeback by defeating Aleksandar Vukic 6-7(5) 6-2 6-3 to see his nation win 3-2 in Sydney. Davis Cup debutant Rinky Hijikata and Jordan Thompson defeated Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-7(7) 6-3 6-4 before Alex de Minaur beat Zizou Bergs 6-2 7-5 to drag Australia back to within one win of their first successful 0-2 comeback since 2015, but Collignon sealed the tie for Belgium.

“Yesterday was very demanding physically,” Collignon said. “I was trying to recover as well as I could for today. It was a long day to wait but I tried to recover as best I could to be ready for this match and I’m very happy with how I played. Physically I was feeling ok. With the adrenaline and the energy from the bench it was crazy, I didn’t feel the legs at all. It was a crazy atmosphere and a crazy match.”

Czechia were tied 1-1 with USA entering play on Saturday at Delray Beach, Florida. Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram defeated Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik 7-6(6) 5-7 6-4 to put USA 2-1 up before Jiri Lehecka defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4 3-6 6-4 and Mensik overcame Frances Tiafoe 6-1 6-4 to see their nation win 3-2 and send them to Bologna.

“I’m not just speaking for myself right now, but the whole team,” Mensik said. “We did an incredible job this last week. I was the last one on the court but throughout the two days everyone put the hard work in. We believed, even when there were bad moments in those two days. I’m obviously happy with my team that we qualified again so it feels amazing right now.”

In the last of the seven Qualifiers Second Round ties to wrap up, Spain defeated Denmark 3-2 in Marbella, completing their first successful comeback from 0-2 down in Davis Cup competition. Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar defeated August Holmgren and Johannes Ingildsen 1-6 6-3 6-2 before Martinez beat Holger Rune 6-1 4-6 7-6(3), saving a match point, with Pablo Carreno Busta sealing the tie by overcoming Elmer Moeller 6-2 6-3.

“The feeling [at Davis Cup] is totally different,” Martinez said. “Maybe I get more nervous but, this adrenaline, it doesn’t work on some players. On me it gives me an extra motivation to play full. I feel the nerves but I can handle them and I think this motivation plays in my favour. Hopefully I can continue playing like this in Davis Cup. For me it’s one of the most important things in my career.”

That result means that Spain were the only home nation to win their Qualifiers 2nd Round tie out of the seven played this week.

David Haggerty, ITF President, said: “It has been a great week of tennis. We have seen a bit of everything at Davis Cup ties around the world this weekend – upsets, debut victories and passionate fans cheering on their teams to the last point. For a player there is nothing like representing your nation in a Davis Cup tie and once again we have seen how much it means to them. We are now looking forward to November’s Final 8 in Bologna, which promises to be another spectacular occasion in the history of this wonderful competition.”

A further 13 World Group I ties and 13 World Group II ties have taken place across the world this weekend, with all action set to be completed by the end of Sunday. Details of how to follow are below.

The draw for the 2026 World Group I and II Play-offs will take place at the ITF offices in London on Tuesday 23 September at 1100 BST.
