Miguel Damas was crowned champion of the XC Copa Real Club de Tenis de Oviedo on Sunday, defeating fellow Spaniard Pedro Vives Marcos 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in a gripping singles final of the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event that lasted two hours and 26 minutes.

On a sunny day in the capital city of Asturias, the historic club – which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year – was packed for the occasion, with a lively atmosphere and the presence of dignitaries including the Principality’s Finance Minister Guillermo Peláez, Oviedo’s Sports Councillor Concepción Méndez and the vice president of the Real Club de Tenis de Oviedo Enrique Castaño.

Reflecting on the contest, Damas described the match as “a rollercoaster.” He seized the opening set in a fierce battle, only for Vives Marcos to recover and take command in the second. But the 25-year-old Madrid native responded in the decider, raising his energy and intensity to close out the victory in two hours and 26 minutes.

“In the end, I took it in the third set because I put more energy into making it happen,” Damas told Tennis TourTalk afterwards. “The first set was a real battle of strength, we were both going all out. The key was that I pushed a little harder, and in tennis that’s what it’s about—hitting more than your opponent while keeping your accuracy and avoiding mistakes. I also trusted myself from the very first moment, and that was crucial.”

The atmosphere around the packed courts impressed the new champion. “I’ve been saying it all week: this is the best ITF tournament in Spain,” he declared. “The people here are very nice, from the last waiter to the ball kids, who did a great job. Everyone is so humble, it’s a pleasure to play in tournaments like this. You feel at home, and that makes everything easier.”

Damas claimed his sixth career title on the ITF World Tennis Tour, his third of the season following his triumphs in Montauban, France and Getxo, Spain. The World No. 402 earned 25 ATP Ranking points, which help him to crack the Top 350 for the first time. Damas lifted the big challenge cup of the Copa Real Club de Tenis de Oviedo for the first time. “It’s really heavy,” he said with a smile. “There are so many big names, who won the title here in the past. Now, my name will also be on the trophy. That makes me very proud.”

Vives Marcos said during the on-court ceremony: “Congratulations to everyone for an amazing tournament, and thanks to the crowd—playing in front of people like this is a real joy,”

With its 90th edition concluded in front of a full house, the Copa Real Club de Tenis de Oviedo reaffirmed its status as one of Spain’s most historic and vibrant tennis tournaments.
