OVIEDO, July 27, 2025
The second round of the XC Copa Real Club De Tenis Oviedo concluded on Wednesday and the favorites to lift the trophy at the ITF World Tennis Tour M25 clay-court event lived up to expectations, booking their spots in the quarterfinals.
Dutchman and No. 5 seed Michiel de Krom opened play on Center Court with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Alvaro Peiro. Despite the one-sided scoreline, De Krom insisted the match was more challenging than it looked. “Especially at the beginning, my opponent didn’t miss much. He’s a good player,” the World No. 526 said. Still, the 22-year-old was satisfied with his performance: “I felt really good out there. Now I just want to enjoy the tournament, fight hard, and see how things go tomorrow,” he added, looking ahead to a quarterfinal clash with No. 3 seed Miguel Damas.
Competing in Oviedo for the third straight year, De Krom praised the event as “one of the best of the season. The club is beautiful, the people are very kind, and I feel really welcome. The courts are great, the staff helps a lot. Angel, the tournament director, is amazing, and Mónica, who takes care of the ball kids, also helps me a lot. Everything here is first-class.”
Second seed Javier Barranco Casano also advanced, defeating Venezuelan Ignacio Parisca 6-0, 6-4. The Spaniard dominated the opening set with near-perfect tennis, though the match tightened in the second as Parisca adjusted his tactics. “I came out strong and played the first set exactly as I had planned,” Barranco Cosano reflected. “I’m happy with the way I executed.”
As for the shift in momentum, Barranco Cosano explained: “After a 6-0 set, the second is always going to be tougher—that’s just tennis. Parisca changed his game, surprised me a bit, and I had some doubts. But I stuck to my tennis, and in the end, it went my way.”
Barranco Casano, the 2022 champion at the Real Club de Tenis Oviedo, is cautiously optimistic about repeating his triumph. “I’m coming back from some injuries, so I’m taking it match by match. Of course, the goal is to win the tournament—that’s why we’re here,” the World No. 405 said. “This is a tournament I really enjoy. If I have to play Futures in Spain, this is one of the ones I choose because they treat me so well. It’s a place I’d always return to.”
