AUGSBURG, August 18, 2025
The fourth edition of the Schwaben Open by Great2Stay wraps up the German clay-court season in Augsburg this week. Main draw action of the ATP Challenger Tour 50 event kicked off on a sunny Monday at the Tennis Club Augsburg-Siebentisch with Inaki Montes-de la Torre knocking out No. 3 seed Patrick Zahraj, winning 6-4, 6-4.
The 22-year-old Spaniard withstood four aces from the German and broke his rival’s serve five times to seal victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
“The key was to stay positive and focused during the entire match,” Montes-de la Torre told Tennis TourTalk afterwards. “It’s my first time in Augsburg and I really like the tournament here. The organizing, the food and the hotel are great.”
The World No. 360 is actually playing his first complete season on the Pro Circuit after he played college tennis and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia. “I really loved playing college tennis. The experience was amazing, being surrounded by a team and coaches. I finished college last May and I decided to go Pro now and give it a shot. Coming on the tour was tough but I am enjoying it.”
Montes-de la Torre, who was born in Pamplona but is based in Barcelona, will next take on either Henri Squire of Germany or Juan Bautista Torres from Argentina.
Dedura downs Martin
Later in the afternoon, German youngster Diego Dedura returned to the courts in Augsburg. The 17-year-old from Berlin made headlines at the Schwaben Open last year when he became the first player of his age group worldwide to record a main draw Challenger match win. This time, he faced 35-year-old Slovak Andrej Martin and impressed the crowd on Center Court with a flawless performance.
The opening games were tightly contested, with Dedura finding himself down a break early on. But once he found his rhythm, the teenager completely turned the match around, reeling off six consecutive games to claim the first set. In the second, the left-hander dominated from start to finish, using his heavy topspin to move the former Top-100 player around the court. After just 71 minutes, Dedura sealed an emphatic 6-2, 6-0 win.
“In the first few games, I needed some time to readjust to the altitude and the higher bounce,” said Dedura. “After that, I got into the match more and more and played really well. Since I had such a good run here last year, with all the memories and the conditions that suit my game perfectly, it almost feels like coming home.”
Up next for the World No. 339 will be sixth-seeded Spaniard Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo, who fought past Raul Brancaccio of Italy 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3. The encounter lasted two hours and 22 minutes.
