Paul Jubb continued his fine run of form on the ITF World Tennis Tour as he dropped just one set all week en-route to claiming the Lexus British Pro Series Aldershot men’s singles title at Aldershot Tennis Centre.

The Yorkshireman was featuring in his third consecutive ITF Tour singles final at the combined ITF M25/W35 event, after claiming a title in Illinois in July and reaching the final in Roehampton in South West London the week before travelling to Hampshire. His number one seeding marked him out as the man to beat, and he lived up to that billing throughout the week, easing past four fellow Brits and going into Sunday’s final as the favourite.

Jubb faced another Brit in Toby Samuel for the title, who had enjoyed a strong run to the final which saw him take down fourth seed Anton Matusevich and second seed Henry Searle. A close battle ensued, with players trading breaks in the first set before a tight tiebreak saw Jubb take the first set. The second set proved equally as balanced, before a late break in the set from Jubb gave him the chance to serve out the match, which he did at the first opportunity, claiming the win 7-6(4) 7-5.

After the match, Jubb said, “It’s always good to get some silverware, no matter the level of tournament. The goal for me right now is to get a lot of matches under my belt, which I’ve been able to do the past three tournaments, making three finals back to back which has been great… being consistent is a very important thing in tennis, so proud of the way I’ve been able to do that.”

The men’s doubles also saw British success, with fourth seeds Lui Maxted (Sussex) and Finn Murgett (Yorkshire) claiming their first title together. The pair won 6-4 7-6(6) against Connor Thomson and James MacKinlay, who had been hoping to make it two titles in two weeks after claiming victory at the Lexus British Pro Series Roehampton the week before.

Maxted said, “Me and Finn always play well together, we knew going into this tournament that we’d have a good chance of winning. We played a very good match today and very happy with the win.” Murgett added, “We played really well all week, we knew it was going to take some of our best stuff to get it done, but we managed to play really well today.”

On the women’s side, Japan’s Hiromi Abe claimed the singles title, defeating France’s third seed Harmoney Tan 7-6(4) 6-2 in the final to win her fourth ITF singles title. British rising star Hannah Klugman enjoyed the best run of the home favourites, reaching the semi-finals before bowing out to eventual runner-up Tan 6-1 6-4.

In the doubles, Brits Esther Adeshina (Hampshire) and Victoria Allen (Derbyshire) came within a whisker of claiming their second title together this year, falling just short against the Japanese pairing of Akiko Omae and singles champion Abe. After claiming the first set tiebreak, Adeshina and Allen were pegged back in the second and taken to a deciding match tiebreak, and after a series of mini breaks for each pair, Omae and Abae managed to secure the win 6-7(2) 6-3 10-8.

Tournament Director Piers Hurfet-Jones said on Sunday, “It’s been another brilliant Lexus British Pro-Series at Aldershot for the combined Men’s and Women’s event. The level of tennis all week was exceptional, and the weather was perfect. This is the 4th year in a row that the tournament has been held at Aldershot Tennis Centre and the players thoroughly enjoy coming back year after year. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to the entire tournament team for a great week”.

International tournaments such as the Lexus British Pro Series Roehampton are part of the LTA’s Performance Competitions Calendar (PCC) which provides significantly enhanced opportunities for British players at each age and stage of the performance player pathway on home soil. The calendar is designed to provide comprehensive opportunities for British players to play, earn ranking points and win prize money at home, throughout the year. The next event in the calendar is a women’s ITF W35 event in Edgbaston in October.
