BONN, August 4, 2025

German teenager Jamie Mackenzie made the most of his opportunity on the main stage of the 2025 Bonn Open on Monday. Competing in his very first ATP Challenger Tour main draw match, the 17-year-old wild card entrey thrilled the home crowd with a composed and confident performance, earning a straight-sets victory over World No. 279 Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida from Brazil.

Mackenzie stormed through the opening set in just 19 minutes and, despite a late scare in the second, held his nerve to seal the biggest win of his young career. The unranked player capitalized on five of his 12 break-point chances to secure a 6-0, 6-4 victory in one hour and 17 minutes.

“It feels incredible,” Mackenzie told Tennis TourTalk. “It was a good match, and I’m really satisfied with my performance. I was a bit nervous towards the end, but that’s part of the game. Overall, I didn’t have many issues on my own serve, though I did run into a few problems at the end.”

Mackenzie, who was born and raised in New Zealand, moved to Germany at the age of 12. Today he lives in Düsseldorf and is sitting at World No. 20 in the Junior Rankings. He won his first match on the Pro Circuit over Czech Tadeus Paroulek at the Metzingen Open ITF World Tennis Tour M25 event last month.

So, what are the main challenges for him at senior’s level?

“The opponents are older and more experienced,” Mackenzie responded. “They’re also physically and mentally stronger. They fight until the very end and don’t make it easy for you. I experienced that firsthand today.”

Next up at the Bonn Open will be No. 7 seed Jurij Rodionov of Austria.
