MASPALOMAS/STARNBERG, July 30, 2025
It was a day of triumph for the Spanish contingent at the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas, as local favourite Kaitlin Quevedo, Adriana Geerling from Murcia, and Catalonia-based Aliona Bolsova all secured their spots in the second round. The lively atmosphere at Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas was further enhanced by the presence of former professional footballer Juan Carlos Valerón, who joined fans in the stands to witness the high-level action.
On Centre Court, fourth seed Kaitlin Quevedo showed exactly why she’s considered one of Spain’s most promising young players. After dropping the first set 4-6 to Malta’s Francesca Curmi, the Gran Canaria native found her rhythm and stormed back with determination and power, eventually sealing a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback victory – much to the delight of her family, who cheered her on courtside.
Also making headlines was seventh seed Aliona Bolsova, a key player in Spain’s Billie Jean King Cup squad, selected by team captain Carla Suarez. The Moldovan-born Spaniard needed just over an hour to dispatch Slovakia’s Radka Zelnickova with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 scoreline.
Adriana Geerling also impressed in her first-round encounter against Italy’s Tatiana Pieri. In a tightly contested match, the Spaniard came out on top 7-6, 6-3, booking her place in the last 16.
Elsewhere, it was heartbreak for the Pieri family, as Tatiana’s sister Jessica also exited the tournament. The Italian was edged out by Japan’s Momoko Kobori in the day’s most dramatic comeback: 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Third seed Justina Mikulskyte of Lithuania cruised past Demi Tran 6-1, 6-4, while German qualifier Emily Seibold delivered the upset of the day by eliminating fifth seed Lia Karatancheva of Bulgaria in a three-set thriller: 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
