MASPALOMAS/STARNBERG, July 29, 2025
The ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas got off to an electrifying start on Tuesday as main draw action began at the Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas. With several Top 100 players in the field, fans were treated to a high-quality day of women’s professional tennis marked by tight battles, unexpected upsets, and dramatic comebacks.
Top seed Arantxa Rus was pushed to her limits by Czech rising star Anna Siskova in a tense three-set battle. The Dutch veteran dropped the first set 2-6 and had to dig deep in a demanding second set, which she edged 7-5. Drawing on her experience, Rus turned the match around and closed it out 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance.
Italy’s Jessica Bertoldo also had to work hard for her place in the next round. After breezing through the first set 6-1 against Eudice Chong of Hong Kong, she was forced into a decider after Chong rallied to take the second 7-5. Bertoldo eventually prevailed in a final set tiebreak to seal her win.
The biggest upset of the day came from Russian qualifier Ekaterina Ovcharenko. In a grueling match lasting over two hours, she stunned the No. 2 seed, Ukraine’s Oleksandra Olinykova, with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-1 victory.
All eyes were on Center Court for the all-Spanish clash between Catalonia’s Ruth Roura and Malaga’s Victoria Gomez. Roura came out firing and dominated the opening set 6-1, but Gomez staged a remarkable comeback, taking the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to move into the next round.
Germany’s Gina Marie Dittmann also delivered a thrilling turnaround. After losing the first set in a tiebreak to Joy de Zeeuw, she bounced back impressively, cruising through the next two sets 6-1, 6-2.
Elsewhere, Swedish qualifying favorite Lisa Zaar made light work of her first-round match, dispatching Verena Meliss 6-0, 6-3. Russian Ekaterina Kazionova also recorded a dominant win, beating Italy’s Victoria Vidal 6-2, 6-1. No. 6 seed Carolina Werner of Germany defeated Mallorca’s Cristina Diaz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
It was a tough day for several Spanish players. Lucky loser Claudia Hoste was knocked out by Japan’s Ayano Shimizu, 6-1, 6-1.
Billie Jean King Cup Captain Carla Suárez Watches Closely
Among those paying close attention from the sidelines was Spanish Billie Jean King Cup captain and former WTA star Carla Suarez. The Gran Canaria native is closely monitoring the performances and progress of the young Spanish talents competing this week.
“They have the level,” Suarez noted. “Technically, they’re solid, but the mental aspect is where the biggest differences are visible. That’s why these tournaments are so important – to help them gain experience. I’m confident that our players will achieve strong results.”
Suarez will have her eye on several key matches on Wednesday, including the tournament debut of fourth seed Kaitlin Quevedo from the Canary Islands. Spanish standouts Aliona Bolsova and Ariadna Geerlings are also set to make their first appearances in the main draw.
