HAGEN/STARNBERG, July 29, 2025
A lively crowd filled the grounds of TC Rot-Weiß Hagen on Tuesday for a full slate of matches on Day 3 of the Platzmann Open 2025, with home favorites Yannick Hanfmann and Justin Engel in the spotlight alongside top seed Botic van de Zandschulp.
Van de Zandschulp, the No. 1 seed of the ATP Challenger Tour clay-court event, lived up to expectations in the day’s headline match on Center Court. The Dutchman cruised past Croatian qualifier Luka Mikrut 6-4, 6-2 in front of approximately 500 spectators. Earlier, Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann also advanced comfortably, defeating Japan’s Jay Dylan Hara Friend 7-5, 6-2. Hara Friend recently captured the gold medal at the University Games in Essen but couldn’t match the experienced Hanfmann on Tuesday.
The day was more challenging for 17-year-old German talent Justin Engel, who lost 6-7(4), 2-6 in an all-German clash with wild card entry Daniel Masur. Fellow teen Max Schoenhaus also fell in straight sets to Swedish qualifier Olle Wallin 6-2, 6-3.
In other action, Niels McDonald, the reigning French Open boys’ champion, impressed with a composed 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 9 seed Jurij Rodionov of Austria, sending a buzz through the home crowd. Later in the evening, Christoph Negritu gave the German fans another reason to cheer, outlasting US-American lucky loser Dali Blanch 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
