The final eight qualifiers have been decided at the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas, setting the stage for a star-studded main draw at Club Conde Jackson Maspalomas. Among those advancing are top seeds Lisa Zaar of Sweden and Russia’s Ekaterina Ovcharenko, alongside Germany’s Emily Seibold and Gina Marie Dittmann, Italy’s Jessica Bertoldo and Verena Meliss, and Dutch hopefuls Joy De Zeeuw and Demi Tran.
Zaar, the No. 1 seed in qualifying, wasted no time in dispatching Spain’s last remaining contender, Claudia Hoste. The Catalan player was outclassed in a swift 6-0, 6-1 defeat. Ovcharenko’s path was far more arduous. The second seed was pushed to the limit by Romania’s Eva Maria Ionescu in a thrilling two-and-a-half-hour showdown, eventually prevailing 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in one of the day’s most compelling matches.
Germany’s Seibold delivered a flawless performance, routing China’s Tianmi Mi 6-0, 6-1. But the biggest surprise came from Demi Tran of the Netherlands, who stunned third seed Nahia Berecoechea of France 7-5, 6-4 in a high-quality encounter.
Another Dutch player, Joy De Zeeuw, also impressed on Center Court, battling past US-American Kate Mansfield in a gritty three-setter that ended 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 after more than two hours. Meanwhile, Gina Marie Dittmann overcame a spirited challenge from Britain’s Freya Christie, holding on for a 6-1, 7-5 win after nearly losing control of the second set.
Main draw action at the ITF World Tennis Tour W100 clay-court event begins Tuesday and promises top-tier competition, with several Top 100 players set to debut. World No. 86 Maiar Sherif of Egypt and No. 94 Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands headline the field, while Spanish hopes rest on Valencia’s Leyre Romero and rising star Kaitlin Quevedo of the Canary Islands. Doubles matches are also scheduled to begin as the tournament kicks into full gear.
