Alexander Bublik and Arthur Cazaux will go head-to-head in the singles final of the Generali Open in Kitzbühel. Bublik, the top seed of the ATP 250 event in the Tyrolean Alps, edged past Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-4 on a rain-interrupted Friday.

Bublik hit 16 winners and was the more solid player, producing only half of the amount of unforced errors compared to his rival. The World No. 30 from Kazakhstan capitalized on three of his nine break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 22 minutes.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Bublik. “In the second set, it felt a bit like a casino for me. Sometimes tennis is like that: you hope for a win and give it your all. That approach has worked well for me in recent weeks. I try to stay grounded, give everything in every match, and see how things go.”

Bublik is now on a seven-match winning streak and is 15-2 since Roland Garros, highlighted by titles at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany and Gstaad. He has reached his 14th ATP Tour final and second on clay after last week’s Swiss Open.

Cazaux wins all-French encounter

Earlier in the day, Cazaux reached his first championship match on the ATP Tour following a 7-5, 6-3 victory over fellow Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. The 22-year-old Montpellier native sent down eight aces and won 84 per cent of his first-service points to advance in one hour and 55 minutes.

“I’m really happy, because tennis is tough,” said Cazaux, who was sidelined from the courts through the end of March and April due to injury. “I had injuries at the beginning of the year, I didn’t play well, so I’m really happy to be in my first final on the ATP Tour. I think the first set was my longest set ever… It wasn’t easy with the rain, but I stayed focused on what I had to do on court. I hope I can continue on this way tomorrow.”

Cazaux will meet Bublik for the second time in as many weeks. The Kazakh beat the French in the semi-finals of last week’s Swiss Open in Gstaad in straight sets.
