The Steffi Graf Stadium was packed to capacity on Sunday at the Berlin Tennis Open by HYLO 2025. More than 4,500 spectators gathered to witness the championship match between Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic and Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang, and they were rewarded with a spectacular tennis showdown.

Vondrousova struck six aces and won 71 per cent of her first-service points to secure a 7-6(10), 4-6, 6-2 victory in two hours and 16 minutes.

Vondrousova’s first final since Wimbledon 2023 – Wang’s first ever

This marked Vondrousova’s first final since her Wimbledon triumph in 2023. For Wang, it was a major milestone: her first WTA Tour title match after having fallen short in six previous semi-finals. Vondrousova’s path to the title in Berlin included wins over three Top 20 players — including, for the first time in her career, a victory against the current World No. 1. Wang’s performance was equally impressive: she defeated four Top 20 players, having never previously beaten more than one top player in a single tournament.

After the match, both players took time to thank the Berlin crowd for their enthusiastic support. Vondrousova also praised the tournament’s development: “It’s incredible how this tournament has evolved. I’ll be very happy to come back next year,” said the newly crowned champion.

More than 35,000 fans attend the event#

Overall attendance exceeded expectations, with more than 35,000 tennis fans turning out over the course of the week.

Andrea Petkovic, serving as the tournament’s “Director of Excitement,” shared her reflections: “The players I spoke with were absolutely thrilled and surprised at how much the tournament has improved. We’ve truly taken it to the next level. The fact that Coco Gauff is still here training for Wimbledon after losing on Thursday says everything about the atmosphere here.”

Petkovic also noted the tournament’s growing popularity: “I had to tell a lot of friends and acquaintances at the end that I couldn’t get them any more tickets.”
