Yannick Hanfmann has cleared the first hurdle in the qualifying rounds and will have the chance on Sunday to reach the main draw of the Terra Wortmann OPEN for the third time, following appearances in 2021 and 2023. The 32-year-old from Karlsruhe, currently ranked No. 135 in the world, previously fell short in Halle’s qualifying rounds in 2017, 2022, and 2024. On Saturday, he defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in convincing fashion, 6-4, 6-1. In one of four final-round qualifying matches, Hanfmann will now face Chilean Nicolas Jarry, who beat US-American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-4. Jarry, once ranked as high as World No. 16 just a year ago, is currently sitting at No. 150.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Justin Engel is riding a wave of confidence following his breakout performance at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart, where he reached the quarterfinals before falling to Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. In Halle, the World No. 281 pulled off another impressive victory. On a packed Schauinsland-Reisen Court, Engel overcame 74th-ranked Russian Roman Safiullin in a dramatic three-set thriller, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, lasting two hours and 45 minutes. Engel saved a match point in the second-set tiebreak and finally broke Safiullin at 5-5 in the third set before serving out the match to thunderous applause. He’ll now face Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, who beat Benjamin Hassan in straight sets, for a spot in the main draw.

Wildcard Max Schoenhaus also fought valiantly in his qualifying debut. The 17-year-old from Soest, ranked outside the Top 1000, faced off against Dutchman Jesper de Jong and showed strong composure throughout. In the first set, both players held serve tightly until Schoenhaus double-faulted to hand over the decisive break. The young German rebounded well to take the second set, but De Jong’s experience proved too much in the third, and Schönhaus eventually fell 5-7, 6-3, 2-6. Still, it was a promising performance for the recent French Open boys’ finalist.

Another German wildcard, Patrick Zahraj, exited early. The 24-year-old from Giessen had little chance against top seed Benjamin Bonzi of France, losing 6-3, 6-4. Bonzi will now face Australia’s Li Tu, who staged a comeback win against Ethan Quinn from the United States, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

In the clash of two veterans, 30-year-old Serbian Laslo Djere defeated 33-year-old Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 7-5, 6-3. Basilashvili, who trains at Halle’s Breakpoint Base and formerly played Bundesliga tennis for TC Blau-Weiß Halle, continues a challenging 2025 season with few ATP-level wins. Djere now moves on to face Jesper de Jong in the final qualifying round.
