Just one day before the start of the Bitpanda Hamburg Open, it’s been confirmed that World No. 2 Alexander Zverev will once again play at his hometown tournament. The Hamburg native received an A+ wildcard, allowing him late entry into the ATP 500 event. After competing at the Masters in Rome, Zverev is using the Hamburg tournament to gain more match practice ahead of the French Open in ten days.

Zverev has a strong connection to Hamburg, where he won the title in 2023 and reached the final in 2024, losing a close match to Arthur Fils. This season, he has already claimed the title at the BMW Open in Munich and was runner-up at the Australian Open, falling to Jannik Sinner. With 24 career titles, including two ATP Finals wins, seven Masters 1000s, and an Olympic gold medal, Zverev remains a top contender on the tour.

“I’m very happy to return to Hamburg,” said Zverev. “Everyone knows how much this city means to me — it’s where I was born, where I started playing tennis, and where I received my first ATP wildcard.”

Tournament Director Enric Molina Mur called Zverev’s participation “fantastic news” for the event, the city, and German tennis, noting the excitement around his return to the Rothenbaum.

Due to injuries and scheduling, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, Tommy Paul, and Lorenzo Musetti have withdrawn. The main draw begins Sunday, May 18, with Zverev set to play his first match on Monday.

Promising 17-year-olds Diego Dedura and Justin Engel also received wildcards. With several withdrawals, Daniel Altmaier moves directly into the main draw without needing a wildcard.
