The ATP Tour’s finest head to Rome for the third and final clay-court ATP Masters 1000 of the season. The Internazionali BNL d’Italia runs from 7-18 May.
Jannik Sinner plays his first event since January’s Australian Open. The World No. 1 has never been past the quarterfinals in Rome, where Adriano Panatta (1976) is the only previous home men’s singles champion.
“It’s a very, very low expectation tournament in general, talking results wise,” said Sinner, who faces either Mariano Navone of Argentina or local wild card entry Federico Cina in his opening match. “For me, what’s missing is the complete feedback of where my level is. That’s going to come slowly with time. After the first round match, I’m going to have a better picture of myself, where I am at.
“It’s very strange feeling again in the beginning to be around so many people and attention. But it’s nice to be back, me and my team are very happy.” Another Italian, Lorenzo Musetti, will compete as a Top 10 player for the first time.
Alexander Zverev defends his Rome title having recently rediscovered some of his best form after a difficult February and March. The 28-year-old German, who won the BMW Open ATP 500 tournament in Munich last month, is in the same half of the draw as Carlos Alcaraz, The Spaniard competes in Rome for just the second time.
