Casanova Clinches Quarterfinals Spot At Santos Brasil Tennis Cup

Hernan Casanova headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Santos Brasil Tennis Cup by knocking out top seed Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan 6-4, 7-6(5). The 30-year-old Argentine converted five of his 10 break-point chances and won 52 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 57 minutes.

Casanova, ranked World No. 346, will next take on his compatriot Juan Bautista Torres, who fought past fifth-seeded Ecuadorian Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-0 in two hours and 46 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw two more players from Argentina booked their spots in the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger Tour 50 clay-court event. Gonzalo Villanueva knocked off No. 8 seed Pedro Sakamoto from Brazil 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The 29-year-old from Parana broke his rival’s serve eight times to prevail after two hours and 21 minutes.

Villanueva will next play No. 2 seed Santiago Rodriguez Taverna, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 winner over Argentine qualifier Leonardo Aboian. The encounter lasted two hours and 43 minutes.
