Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson‘s debut week as a doubles duo culminated in a thrilling victory at the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday. The US-American-Australian combination, originally known for their singles prowess, triumphed over Ariel Behar from Uruguay and Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic with a solid 6-3, 7-6(7) performance to claim the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 title.

Participating under a new format that featured up to 16 slots reserved for teams entering via their singles ranking, Korda and Thompson navigated through a competitive field. Despite facing tough opponents, they dropped only one set throughout the tournament, showcasing their skills on the doubles court.

We practised a tonne, and this was our first tournament together,” said Korda after lifting his maiden tour-level doubles trophy. “It was a pretty good one, and [we will play] next week again in Rome. It was a lot of fun playing with Jordan this week and looking forward to next week.”

Thompson added following his sixth doubles triumph on the ATP Tour: “He hit too good of a return and I just smoked myself in the head. I thought I was heading for the ER. It wasn’t that bad. A bit of a headache, but not bad. [The trophy] will help smooth things out.”
