Michael Agwi captured his first career title on the Pro Circuit by winning the eighth edition of the TennisBase Open hosted by the Bavarian Tennis Association’s National Training Center in Oberhaching. The 20-year-old Irish defeated local favourite Max Hans Rehberg 7-6, 6-1 in Sunday’s singles final of the ITF World Tennis Tour M15 event.

Agwi, who battled his way through the qualifying into the championship match, fired 10 aces and won 77 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 35 minutes.

“I was very nervous at the beginning of the match but I gained confidence by winning the first set,” said Agwi. “I have improved my physical fitness over the past two years and now I am also mentally strong. This helps to move on.” The World No. 935 was born in Ireland and represents the Emerald Isle but grew up in Berlin and is fluent in German.

TennisBase professional Daniel Masur, the defending champion in singles, had to bury his hopes for another triumph early in the second round with a loss to his doubles partner Mili Poljicak. However, he managed to rehabilitate himself by claiming the doubles title alongside the Croatian. In a thrilling final showdown, the duo emerged victorious against Italian Giovanni Oradini and Metej Vocel from the Czech Republic, winning 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.
