The top two seeds of the Ano II – Brasil Tennis Challenger will lead the semi-finals line-up in Piracicaba. Federico Coria, top-ranked player of the ATP Challenger Tour 75 clay-court tournament, edged past last week’s Punta del Este Open champion Gianluca Mager of Italy 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 on Friday.

Coria converted seven of his 10 break-point opportunities to secure victory in two hours and seven minutes. The World No. 103 from Argentina will take on home favourite Marco Pucinelli de Almeida in the stage of the last four. The 22-year-old Brazilian defeated Alexander Weis of Italy 7-6(2), 7-6(4) in two hours and 16 minutes.

“It was a point-by-point battle,” Pucinelli de Almeida said. “He is solid, makes you play all the time, doesn’t give up. I had my chance in the second set, served for the match, got tense again, but played the tie-breaks well, and that made the difference.”

In the bottom half of the draw, No. 2 seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli remained untroubled during his 6-1, 6-4 win over Swiss qualifier Kilian Feldbausch. The 24-year-old Buenos Aires native capitalized on all of his five break-point chances and won 61 per cent of the total points played to advance in one hour and 20 minutes.

Up next for Ugo Carabelli will be Briton Felix Gill, who knocked off No. 3 seed Ivan Gakhov of Russia 6-0, 7-6(3) in one hour and 30 minutes.

“I had this dream of playing in Brazil since I saw the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the World Cup,” said Gill. “Reaching the semi-final here, and maybe more, is incredible. I’m loving playing here.”
