Renata Zarazua is the 2023 champion of the Montevideo Open, an WTA 125 clay-court tournament held for the third time at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The 26-year-old Mexican, who will rise from World No. 128 to 105th position in the WTA Rankings following her 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Diane Parry of France on Sunday, secured her first career title on the WTA Tour.

“Montevideo will always be in my heart,” Zarazua said after her win. The match between the top two seeds lasted two hours and 45 minutes.

Zarazua, the great-niece of former Mexican Davis Cup player Vicente Zarazua, had suffered a loss in the semi-finals last week during the Argentina Open. Parry reached the Montevideo Open final for the second time, having won the tournament in 2021 and being a finalist in Buenos Aires as well.

“I promise to return next year,” said Zarazua, emphasizing the warmth of the audience. “Without the spectators in the stands, it would have been impossible to win,” added the player, who concluded her 2023 season with this triumph in Uruguay.
